Breakfast

This morning you are at leisure to acquaint yourself with your new surroundings

Situated to the north of the city center of Durban, Umhlanga Rocks is a substantial settlement with a permanent population of around 50,000 people. Its border merges with the suburb of Durban North and its proximity to the city center makes it the perfect place for a short escape from the bustle of the city. Whether you are looking for a great stretch of beach for swimming or walking, a quiet evening meal or even some great vacation accommodation, Umhlanga Rocks is the perfect place to go

The name ‘Umhlanga’ is Zulu for ‘Place of Reeds’. Indeed, this well watered area must have been quite reedy when it was initially inhabited by the San people and later by the Zulu people. In more recent years, however, Umhlanga Rocks has gained a reputation for being a great vacation location boasting top-notch hotels. This trend started in 1869 when the Oyster lodge, Umhlanga’s first beach cottage, was built overlooking the sea. It not only offered guests beautiful accommodation and wonderfully warm hospitality, but also offered tea and scones to passers-by. Its roof was also used as a beacon to help ships navigate their way around the coast until 1954 when the current lighthouse was built for this purpose. The first official hotel in the area was built in the 1920’s and more hotels soon followed. Before long, Umhlanga Rocks became the most sought after vacation destination in the area and from there it slowly grew into the ever-popular resort town that it is today

At Umhlanga Rocks, you will find that the pleasant, sandy beach is dominated by a red and white lighthouse boasting an interesting historical background! During the holiday season, this delightful stretch of beach is usually bustling with activity and many people find themselves looking for other forms of entertainment. Chartwell Drive is the best place to go shopping in this resort town, with a good selection of smart, well-stocked shopping malls. Another option is the monster Gateway Mall at Umhlanga Ridge – a massive shopping center complex with some 400 shops and 14 cinemas

After lunch today, you enjoy an afternoon sightseeing tour of the city of Durban visiting all of the major sights of this seaside city hugging the Indian Ocean coastline

The remainder of your evening is at leisure

INANDA
PROTEA HOTEL UMHLANGA
Breakfast

You travel a short distance to Inanda Seminary this morning where you will worship with the local congregation and meet new friends

There can be no finer way of introducing you to Inanda Seminary than by quoting the Reverend Susan M Valiquette - Chaplain, Inanda Seminary who kindly corresponded with 2AFRIKA regarding the GOOD SAM SAFARI TO KWAZULU/NATAL - SOUTH AFRICA

Inanda Seminary was founded by the American Board of Missions (ABM) in 1869.  The school is situated 25km North West of Durban, South Africa; it became the first secondary school exclusively for African girls in southern Africa.

I am Reverend Susan Valiquette and I serve as the current Chaplain of Inanda Seminary.  I am an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and supported through Global Ministries (Wider Church Ministries—United Church of Christ and the Division of Overseas Ministries—Christian Church Disciples of Christ).

The first missionaries were the Rev Daniel Lindley and his wife, Lucy.  They came to South Africa in 1835, as one of six couples sent by the ABM to start mission work in country. By 1847 the Lindleys established themselves near Chief Mqhawe’s kraal in the Inanda area to work among the Ngcobo people who had been dispossessed of their land and threatened with massacre by Chief Dingaan’s impis.  Daniel and Lucy Lindley and their 11 children moved onto the Inanda Mission in 1858.  The Mission House, now a National Monument and currently used as the Seminary’s General Office, was built by Daniel Lindley with home-burned bricks. On 1 March1869 the Inanda Seminary opened as a boarding school with nineteen girls being initially admitted.  Mary Kelly Edwards, a 40 year old widow from Ohio, was appointed as the first Principal of the Inanda Seminary. She continued her association with the school until she died at the age of ninety-eight – only returning once to America in that period.

Inanda Seminary was one of few mission schools that managed to retain its independence and withstand the onslaught of Bantu Education.  However times and finances were difficult culminating in the apartheid government dismissal of the ABM missionaries and teaching staff in the 1970s when they refused to renew their residence permits.  Dumi Cecil Zondi was then appointed not only the first South African, but also the first black male to Head the Seminary.

The United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) attempted to uphold quality education at Inanda but by 1997 Inanda Seminary was on the verge of closure. The property and buildings deteriorated and international support for the school declined.  The alumnae approached the UCCSA to request taking over the running of the school in order to prevent this closure and to restore its role in society.  The alumnae formed a Committee of 10, mobilised themselves and generated monetary support with the assistance of former president Nelson Mandela who in 1999 secured corporate sponsorship from South African Pulp and Paper Industry (Sappi).  This resulted in the renovation of several buildings, the establishment of a maintenance trust fund and staff training and development.

Judy Tate, the current principal of Inanda Seminary emphasises the importance of a holistic education programme that upholds Christian values and a daily chapel service, while embracing African traditions as well as independent thinking and the freedom of expression.  Today more than 70-80% of the matriculants continue their education at higher education institutions.

The vision statement of the school includes the empowerment of students (affectionately known as “members”) to play a role in the development of the nation and become future leaders. The school’s alumnae form the majority of black female leadership in the country.  Alumane have held the offices of Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, the Minister in the Presidency, the Minister and Deputy Minister of Health and many other distinguished South Africans.   They have indeed fulfilled the roles that were visualised for Inanda members!

The mission and purpose of the Seminary is captured in its six core values and its commitment to service.  These are honesty, loyalty, self-discipline, respect, sociability and responsibility.  These values form the foundation of all that is offered and accomplished at the Seminary. This enables Seminary members and alumni, in the words of the school motto, to “shine where you [they] are.”

This afternoon, you pay tribute to the great 20th Century leader Mahatma Gandhi at the Phoenix Settlement, where he originally worked out his philosophy of passive resistance. Today a South African heritage site, Gandhi’s home contains the printing press on which the country’s first Indian newspaper was printed as well as a collection of photographs of Gandhi in SA and India

This is a large and incredibly scenic park with rippling hills covered in low acacia bush, and lofty viewpoints giving a bird's eye view of who's doing what where. The north of the park is more rugged and mountainous with forests and grasslands, while the south and west is more undulating with open savannah. Hluhluwe is a difficult word to pronounce but something sounding like "Shoushlooee" is close enough

The park contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora and is particularly famous for its conservation of black and white rhino. It contains hundreds of endangered black rhino and the largest population of white rhino in the world
